Why Do Some Women Wear Too Much Bad Makeup?

There's a report making the rounds that implies that women wear more makeup than they'd prefer — because they mistakenly recollect other people discover information technology attractive.

You can find the paper (from The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology) here and some coverage at Time and The Atlantic. But I don't retrieve all the study'south conclusions are quite right, and some of the coverage seems overblown.

The newspaper does accept some intriguing findings, which I'll walk yous through below. Only I don't call back its data really says that women are wearing "too much" makeup.

At that place'southward a trouble with the experiment'south design. The researchers took a picture of models with blank faces. And so they told the women to apply makeup for a "nighttime out," but photographed them in bright, mean solar day-like lighting and had people gauge that.

Faces

A model with no makeup on the left, 100% makeup on the right, and a computer generated image with 50% makeup in the middle. Jones AL et al. Q J Exp Psychol (Hove). 2014 Apr 22:1-ix.

The researchers used computer imaging to produce a range of 21 faces for each model, all the mode from an extrapolated -50 percentage makeup to a 150 percent makeup.

So they showed the pictures to other participants (students from Bangor Academy in the UK ) and asked them which image they personally thought was optimally attractive every bit well every bit what they thought other people would prefer.

Overall, men and women preferred something that was roughly a 65 per centum makeup face. More intriguing was that both men and women thought that other participants of both sexes would choose faces with more than makeup (roughly the lxx per centum to 85 percent range)than they actually did .

In the media's response, "people have really focused on females 'tying their makeup utilize to male expectancies' which has acquired a bit of a stir across message boards. People have also missed out how both male person and female observers thought other females like more than cosmetics every bit well, " pb author Alex Jones of Bangor University told me in an email. "I think that'south an important signal."

And why is there this difference betwixt what people liked and idea others would like? We don't know for certain. It'due south possible that at that place's really a gap in expectations. (Or it'south possible that people felt social pressure to report that they personally liked a more than natural face up than they actually did.)

The participants likewise thought that men would like faces with somewhat more than makeup than women would. All the same, this sex deviation didn't really bear out in reality. Beyond the entire study , men and women responded almost identically to the faces. (The actual differences betwixt what women versus men liked or expected other people to like was very minor, a statistically significant, but tiny upshot of approximately 3 pct.)

At present did these models put on more makeup than people actually detect attractive? The paper'southward authors, as well as the Time and The Atlantic stories, assert that women are wearing too much makeup considering they recall that men (and women) like it. "These results propose that women are probably wearing cosmetics to entreatment to the mistaken preferences of others," the study says.

However, the women in these brightly-lit pictures were told to put on makeup for a "night out." They were wearing their night faces, likely optimized for dark nighttime places like bars, restaurants, clubs, and moving picture theaters. Women often clothing heavier makeup to get out at dark than they would during the day. It's pretty darn common.

Nosotros don't know for sure what kinds of lighting the models were expecting to exist seen in. The researchers didn't ask them.Just given the possible differences between expected lighting conditions and actual lighting weather (that'due south a big change in a variable), I don't retrieve this report can tell you whether women are choosing to clothing more makeup than other people find attractive.

To take whatsoever thought, models' intentions would demand to exist probed further. (N o 1 asked the models what they thought of their ain pictures. They may take thought, "This would look awesome by candlelight, merely non like this." )

The report's authors recognize this problem ("Our participants were instructed to utilize cosmetics for a 'night out' and so may accept incorporated ideas of low lighting, a particular dress style, and so on "), but I don't retrieve they practise enough to account for it ("However, every bit demonstrated in Figure 1, there was aught peculiarly unusual in the style the sample of models applied cosmetics").

I asked Jones nearly it. "I feel adequately confident that a nighttime out makeup expect and a job makeup look didn't really differ too much for our perceptions. Yet, whether the results would exist different for twenty-four hour period to 24-hour interval makeup, I don't know — my guess is it might well be," he said. "I do concur it'due south a weakness."

Three men wrote this study almost women'due south makeup. Mayhap that's something to think about, besides.
