A jigsaw puzzle is "any set of varied, irregularly shaped pieces that, when properly assembled, form a picture or map." The first puzzles, created in England during the 1700s, were teaching tools - "dissected" maps, alphabets, or pictures of animals.

By the late 1800s, they were a popular form of amusement, and continued to be during the Great Depression, as puzzles were inexpensive.

Today, puzzles are often made of cardboard or wood. Puzzles may feature popular cartoon characters, famous paintings, or photographs of animals or beautiful places.

Puzzles have a further place in popular culture. Since 1963, a puzzle piece logo has been used by various autism awareness groups "to symbolize the idea that autistic people are difficult to comprehend (like a puzzle) and that the 'cure' for autism is the missing piece."

Another cultural reference is The Puzzle Place children's television series of the 1990s. The story followed a multi-ethnic group of puppets facing common problems of youth.

It was ranked with Barney & Friends and Sesame Street as one of the most popular children's shows of its time.

Don't look so puzzled - this easy, step-by-step cartoon drawing tutorial is here to walk you through the creation of your very own picture puzzle. All you will need is a pen, pencil, marker, or crayon and a sheet of paper.

How to Draw a Puzzle Step 01

1. Begin by drawing a long curved line - or a series of curved and straight lines - to outline the sides of the first puzzle piece. Notice the "C" shaped indentation on one side of the piece, and the "C" shaped protrusion on the other.

2. Draw a straight line from each end of the lines. From one straight line, draw a "C" shaped line pointed inward, and at the other, draw a "C" shaped line protruding outward. Draw a straight line from one and a curved line from the other. Allow these lines to connect at a point, completing the outline of the basic square shape of the puzzle piece.

Color your cartoon puzzle pieces. You can make each piece a solid color as in our illustration, or you can draw a picture that has been pieced together.

Why not try drawing an island sunset or a mountain scene on your puzzle?

Fun tip: After you draw a picture or scene on your puzzle pieces, you can cut them out and put them together like a real puzzle! Challenge your friends or give the puzzle as a gift.
